Investment terminology
Asset classes:
Shares/Equities – A share represents ownership in a company. Public companies trade through a central exchange. Examples include the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) & New York Stock Exchange (NYSE).
Property – Real estate that can be either residential or commercial
Bonds/Fixed Interest – A contractual agreement to lend money to a government or company in return for interest and the return of the amount lent (principal) at maturity
Cash – Funds available at call that usually earn interest
Options – A type of derivative that was initially designed to provide a hedge against the downside risk of shares
Futures – A type of derivative providing exposure to many markets (e.g. commodities, shares, FOREX, livestock) worldwide.
